Marijuana has been deemed legal just recently. Most countries used to ban their citizens from planting cannabis and consuming it. Its use was quite controversial. Today, scientists have conducted many studies about marijuana and ended up with with the fact that under the right circumstances, the plant can give many health benefits for the user.
Recreational users usually smoke ground marijuana or cooking it with cookies, brownies, and even curry. They seek for the elevating effect of the plant. And now we know that there are two primary substances in cannabis, which are THC and CBD. THC is responsible for the high effect a user has, while CBD has been linked to various health benefits.
Treating Glaucoma
Glaucoma causes the pressure inside the eyeballs to rise dangerously. Without any treatments, the condition can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss. And marijuana can reduce that pressure.
This healing property was once studied by National Eye Institute in the 1970s. People with glaucoma who smoke weed had reduced IOP (Intra-Ocular Pressure) compared to patients with the same health condition but not smoking marijuana.
Increasing Lung Capacity
Although we smoke both tobaccos and cannabis, the later seems to bear less harm than the first. A study published in the Journal of the American Association showed us that fact that smoking marijuana does not damage the lungs. The habit even seems to increase the smoker’s lung function. And it is not a genetic trait miracle because the study used an extensive range sample over a long research period (5,115 young adults in 20 years).
Preventing Seizure Episodes for Epileptic People
Marijuana that is high in CBD can treat nerve breakdowns and brain defects. Epilepsy can be episodic, and administering CBD can reduce the chances of the episode’s occurrence. Medical experts began to study the relationship between marijuana use and epilepsy in 2003. An epileptic mouse was given synthetic weed, and it showed reduced symptoms.
However, epileptic people seem to need both THC and CBD to get the full health benefit of smoking marijuana. THC’s heightening property can also relax the mind. In the case of epilepsy, THC is an active relaxant that can reduce the overstimulation on the brain cells.
Killing Cancer Cells
CBD in weed prevents the activation of the gene Id-1, a gene that is responsible for turning healthy cells to be cancerous. However, this healing property is still under experimentation. The researchers who came out with that result were from California Pacific Medical Center, San Fransisco. The healing property occurs in a controlled room. We still do not know if smoking marijuana can kill cancer cells outside the lab.…
